ReBuy Online Casino Tournaments

July 9, 2010

In online tournaments players pay an entry fee and are given a stack of play money chips. They wager on the designated game and try to increase their chip balance as much as they can. They can wager till their allotted time gets over or till they lose all their chips. The chip balance at the end of the time is their score. The players with the highest scores share the prize pool.

If online tournaments were run exactly in this format they would be nowhere as exciting as they actually are. A run of bad luck early on can damage the starting chip stack so badly that the player can never recover. The solution to this is to allow the player to enter again by paying an additional fee. The player gets a number of attempts and can thus counter the bad luck. The money collected increases tremendously. In guaranteed prize pool tournaments the online casinos can offer larger prizes and in pot prize online tournaments the pot directly grows larger because players enter again and again.

Such tournaments are called rebuy tournaments and almost all online tournaments follow this format. The structure of rebuy tournaments can be understood by understanding the key terms that define these tournaments. The first term is the rebuy fee. It is the amount paid to the online casino when the player wants to replenish his chip stack. In most online tournaments the rebuy fee would be the same as the entry fee. However where the entry fee has been kept very low to attract low rollers the rebuy is usually higher. Freeroll tournaments have no entry fee but players have to pay the rebuys if they want to replenish their chip stack.

A player cannot rebuy anytime he wants to. If this were allowed then he could increase his chip balance tremendously without wagering simply through rebuys. This would be unfair and would defeat the purpose of the online tournament. Hence players can rebuy only after they have exhausted all their chips. Most online tournaments allow rebuys at a nominal balance of about $5. This level is referred to as rebuy balance. It enables players to continue with the betting pattern as per their strategy. Otherwise they would have to break the pattern and wager the residual amount before the rebuy. For example if the player is wagering $10 per spin in a slots tournament and finds himself left with $3. The rebuy balance of $5 enables the player to purchase a fresh stack and continue placing wagers of $10.

The next term to be understood is rebuy additional balance. This is the value of the chips that are purchased in the rebuy. It is usually of the same value as the starting stack. The final term is the maximum number of rebuys. Some online tournaments allow players to rebuy any number of times they want to. This loads the tournament in favor of high rollers, who have a much larger bankroll. By being able to play many more times they have much greater chances of registering winning scores. New players and low rollers generally avoid such tournaments. Therefore many online casinos limit the maximum number of rebuys in such a manner that a balance is achieved between fairness to low rollers and excitement in the tournament.
